Hand-Painted Shop Lettering Above a Long Wooden Boardwalk

I walked into Dawson City from where my van was parked and found this group of wooden storefronts. The blacksmith shop held my attention with its large painted lettering and dark siding. I photographed the frontage in black and white, keeping the raised boardwalk and neighbouring buildings together in one broad view.

The words curve across the central shop above a pair of doors, with large windows on either side. Pale trim separates them from the darker boards, while the long railing stretches across all three storefronts and gives the composition a steady horizontal line. The taller building at the left and the lighter shop at the right have their own proportions, but the boardwalk joins them visually. Plants along its base add softer shapes beneath the regular posts and narrow rails.

Travelling by van gave me time to walk without a fixed schedule and pay attention to the light on these facades. I wanted the lettering to remain readable while retaining the grain, worn paint, and smaller details around the doors. The resulting photograph is close enough to invite a look at those surfaces, yet wide enough to show how the shops sit beside one another. For me, its character comes from that combination of practical signage, simple wood construction, and the continuous line of the boardwalk.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
