Modern Perth Rising Above the Elizabeth Quay Waterfront
What interested me here was how completely the waterfront opened the city up.
From Elizabeth Quay, Perth rises in a broad sweep across the water, with glass office towers, older buildings and distinctive modern architecture forming a remarkably clean skyline. I wanted enough distance from the city to let those individual structures separate rather than collapse into one dense mass.
The water became an important part of the composition. It creates space across the foreground and allows the skyline to sit comfortably beneath an enormous Western Australian sky. The clear blue light gives the photograph a completely different character from the dense urban scenes I often photograph at street level.
I also liked the mixture of architecture. Tall commercial towers dominate the centre, while lower waterfront buildings, public spaces and the sculptural forms around Elizabeth Quay soften the transition between the city and the river. On the right, the warmer brick architecture provides a visual counterpoint to all the glass and steel.
Perth struck me as a city where the relationship between downtown and the water is difficult to separate. Standing here, both were part of the same scene.
That is what I wanted to photograph—not simply a collection of skyscrapers, but the wider shape of Perth itself. Water, architecture, open sky and the Elizabeth Quay waterfront all come together to give the city a spaciousness that is very different from many other large urban centres I have photographed.
