Rusting abandoned whale oil tanks are the only remnants of the Deception Island whaling operation.

In the urban landscape photo above, large metal oil tanks slowly rust on the volcanic black rock beach in an abandoned whaling station.  The old station is located at Whalers Bay on Deception Island, a barren outer shore of an active volcano in Antarctica's South Shetland Islands.  The abandoned remains are haunting.

Whalers Bay Station Antarctica

The vast, hulking round graffiti-covered tanks that once held thousands of gallons of whale oil.  The massive storage tanks sit there, rusted and empty.  Once a hugely successful commercial operation in the Antarctic, the invention of offshore whaling in 1925 signaled the end of operations on Deception Island.
