Blue Ice Walls Around a Bright Antarctic Pool

The turquoise water draws my eye into this Antarctic iceberg scene. It occupies a narrow space between pale blue ice walls, with a small view of snow covered mountains beyond. I photographed the pool with the nearer ice filling both sides of the frame. That arrangement makes the colour of the water particularly clear, while leaving an opening toward the more distant landscape.

The two sides have different shapes. On the left, the ice rises steeply with rougher folds and deep blue creases. To the right, a broader sloping surface comes down toward the water, with smaller ridges and openings higher above it. I like how those differences keep the view from feeling symmetrical even though the pool stays near the centre.

Fine ripples run across the water. Their highlights give the turquoise area a visible surface, rather than letting it become one flat block of colour. The ice along its edges is brighter, with cooler blue tones concentrated in the deeper recesses.

Above the opening, white clouds cross a blue sky, and a dark rocky portion of the distant mountains interrupts the snow. Those farther details are only a small part of the photograph, but they provide a scale beyond the close ice walls. I wanted the image to hold both distances: the textured surfaces immediately around the pool and the mountain view through them. The colour connects the scene, moving from turquoise water to paler ice and then the sky above.
