Fractured Granite Forms Beneath A Layered Coastal Cloudscape
The granite at Peggy’s Cove fills this photograph with rounded surfaces and deep, intersecting cracks. I was drawn to the way the rocks form a landscape of their own, with a broad smooth slab in front and increasingly broken shapes leading towards the sky. A large loose boulder near the foreground gives the eye a clear place to begin.
From there, the lines of the rock carry attention deeper into the scene. Some cracks run diagonally, others divide the granite into more upright blocks. Their dark recesses make the pale surfaces appear more substantial, and the small changes in texture prevent the stone from feeling uniform. I like how much movement can come from such solid material.
Clouds add a different rhythm above the rocks. Their softer bands and patches of light contrast with the sharper divisions below, while the low horizon leaves the granite as the main subject. The sky is active enough to balance the foreground without pulling attention away from it.
I photographed this view in 2014 and chose black and white to bring out the relationship between shape, texture and tone. It offers a close look at the rocky character of this Nova Scotia coastline, with the stone itself carrying most of the image. For someone who enjoys rugged landscape photography or natural forms with an almost sculptural quality, it makes a detailed coastal print for a study, living room or cottage.
