Grass-Topped Cliffs Receding Beside a Quiet Silver Sea
Green cliffs follow the coast away from the foreground at Ballintoy in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. I photographed them from above the water, leaving a broad expanse of sea on the left and a small strip of grass near the lower right. The view is built around that relationship between a strongly defined shoreline and much quieter open water.
The nearest cliff has the most detail. Dark rock faces, lighter exposed areas, and grass along the top give it a layered appearance. Small turquoise patches gather at the base, where the water meets the rock. I like how those changes bring the coastline forward without needing a large breaking wave to make it interesting.
Farther along, the cliffs become smaller and darker, leading toward a low headland near the horizon. Their repeated rises and recesses create a steady movement through the frame. The sea beside them remains comparatively simple, with fine ripples and a pale band of reflected light giving its surface depth.
Clouds spread across the sky in soft grey and white shapes, echoing some of the coast’s uneven forms. They keep the light varied while the green land remains clear against the rock and water. I wanted to preserve the openness of this Northern Irish coastal scene, with the nearest cliff providing detail and the distant shoreline extending the view. The photograph rewards both that larger sweep and the small changes of colour where land and sea meet.
