A Carved Wooden Hand Raised Above Motorcycle Handlebars
An oversized wooden hand reaches into the pale sky above a carved figure seated behind motorcycle handlebars. I encountered this unusual yard scene while exploring back roads outside Salem, Massachusetts. In my black and white photograph, the figure’s hat, long carved beard and narrow face stand above the motorcycle parts, with grass, trees and another wooden figure filling the space behind it.
The combination of wood and metal was what first drew me closer. The raised arm gives the carving a strong vertical line, while the handlebars, mirrors and front fork spread into a more complicated arrangement below. An empty headlamp housing faces towards the camera, and cables cross the frame between the grips. Beside those manufactured shapes, the wooden limbs remain rough and irregular. The grain runs through the face and beard, giving even the simplest carved features a surface worth looking at closely.
I photographed the scene as I found it, with the soft sky keeping the light even across the yard. I liked the humour of the large greeting hand, but also the way the figure seemed to occupy its setting with a personality of its own. Keeping the surrounding foliage and second sculpture in the picture gives a sense of the place where I stopped. It is a distinctive photograph for someone drawn to folk sculpture, curious roadside scenes or vintage motorcycle imagery. For me, it preserves one of those unexpected encounters that make travelling the quieter roads so rewarding.
