New Bedford Working Fishing Fleet Black and White Photography
Fishing Boat Bows Beneath a Dense Pattern of Masts and Rigging
Closely moored fishing boats line the New Bedford waterfront in this black and white photograph. Their dark bows face the harbour beneath a dense arrangement of masts, cables, and lifting gear. I made the image in Massachusetts in 2025, drawn to the way the fleet formed a continuous pattern while each vessel kept its own shape.
The nearer boats occupy the right side of the frame, their pale cabins set above heavier hulls. Names and smaller fittings become visible across the fronts, while the rigging rises into a comparatively plain sky. Farther left, more boats recede along the waterfront and a small vessel appears out on the water. Gentle ripples break the reflections beneath the hulls, keeping the lower part of the picture softer than the close web of lines above.
Standing at the edge of the working harbour, I was interested in the fleet as a group. I left open water beside it so that the repeated bows and upright equipment would have space around them. Monochrome makes those structural relationships easier to follow, but it also preserves the small differences between boats: the angle of a cabin, the height of a mast, or a strip of light along a hull. For me, the photograph holds the character of New Bedford’s waterfront in that combination of shared purpose and individual detail. The vessels are at rest within the frame, with their equipment still giving the scene its unmistakable working shape.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
