Stacked Fire Escapes Above a Narrow Boston Passage

The narrowness of this Boston alley was what made me stop. Brick walls rise close together on either side, with metal fire escapes stacked above an empty strip of pavement. I photographed the passage in black and white while walking through the city’s older districts, looking beyond the more visible fronts of its buildings. The view leads towards a small marked door at the far end.

From where I stood, the pale edges of the walkway formed two strong lines into the distance. Above them, window frames, pipes and stair platforms created a much denser pattern. The largest fire escape projects from the right wall, its open steps and railings overlapping several levels of brickwork. Smaller platforms interrupt the left side. I liked the way these practical structures gave the upper half of the photograph a complicated rhythm, while the ground remained relatively simple and open.

The monochrome treatment allows the masonry, metal and pavement to sit within one range of tones. Dark patches on the ground echo the shadows beneath the stairs, and pale window surrounds keep the walls from becoming uniform. I left the passage empty in the frame as I encountered it, letting its depth and surfaces carry the picture. For someone who enjoys urban architecture, this offers a quieter view of Boston, built around the details of an everyday service space. It reminds me how often a city reveals its character in the narrow routes behind the buildings we usually notice first.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
