A Pedimented Entrance Below Repeated Windows and Pale Stone Bands
The front entrance gives this photograph its centre. Pale double doors sit beneath a triangular pediment, with two lamps, a short staircase and windows arranged to either side. I photographed the Lowe House Office Building in Annapolis, Maryland, in 2016. The appeal for me was the clear balance of the facade and the way its brick and stone details fit together.
Black and white brings the building’s geometry forward. Dark brickwork forms a fine repeated pattern behind the pale window surrounds. Vertical bands of stone divide the upper wall, while the entrance has a broader, lighter setting below. I like how the larger architectural forms establish the view before the smaller bricks and windowpanes become noticeable.
The vertical framing gives the doorway and the rows of windows room to relate to one another. In the foreground, the pavement and steps lead toward the entrance without introducing much distraction. A shrub at the lower right provides a softer shape beside the masonry. Light creates small differences across the surfaces, keeping the formal arrangement from feeling flat.
I see this photograph offering a quiet architectural presence on a wall. It would suit an interest in Annapolis, Maryland buildings or monochrome photography built around order and proportion. For me, the lasting detail is the entrance held within the larger facade: the pale doors, the angled pediment and the repeated windows above them. The composition is straightforward, but its layers of brickwork, stone and glass give it plenty to explore.
