Sunlit Spires Within the Deep Shadows of Canyon de Chelly
From above, Spider Rock looks slender against the enormous walls of Canyon de Chelly. I photographed this Arizona landscape in black and white, with the twin spires rising near the center of a much wider view. Sunlight catches their vertical faces while deep shade spreads across the canyon behind them.
The surrounding rock gives the formation its scale. Across the top of the photograph, a long cliff edge runs almost horizontally. Beneath it, ledges and slopes descend into a darker basin. The spires interrupt those broad shapes with two narrow lines, distinct enough to remain the focus without filling the frame.
I was drawn to the way the light separates one surface from another. The wall on the right is bright, its layers easy to follow, while the opposite side falls into heavier tones. Spider Rock sits between them, carrying both light and shadow along its deeply marked faces.
In the foreground, brush and uneven rock make a rough edge to the view. They keep the canyon from becoming only an abstract arrangement of cliffs. The photograph still feels like a place seen from an overlook, with nearer ground leading into the drop beyond.
For me, the strength of this image is that relationship between a distinctive landmark and its setting. The rock formation is striking on its own, but the space around it makes its height more apparent. Black and white brings the canyon’s layered surfaces forward, giving a familiar Southwestern landscape a clear, textured presence.
