Two Wooden Towers and Freight Cars Beneath Layered Clouds
Travelling through southwestern Saskatchewan, I photographed these grain elevators in Shaunavon with a broad bank of clouds rising behind them. Two wooden towers stand at different distances, linked visually by pale freight cars and the grain-handling structures between them. The black and white view keeps their shapes clear within the open prairie setting.
The larger elevator on the right has a bright front face, with Shaunavon and Saskatchewan lettering visible on its siding. Dark windows and roof edges interrupt the pale surface, while attached buildings extend the form toward the ground. Farther left, the second elevator repeats the main shape on a smaller scale, giving the scene a strong pair of verticals.
Between them, cylindrical metal silos and narrow equipment frames introduce different patterns. The freight cars stretch horizontally across the lower part of the structures, and the field leaves an open foreground. I wanted those supporting elements to stay in the photograph because they show the elevators within an agricultural and railway setting.
What held my attention was the balance between the tall buildings and the larger sky. The clouds have broad, rounded forms, while the elevators remain sharply edged and compact. Monochrome lets their textures sit together without losing that difference in scale. The photograph keeps both towers in view, giving the eye room to move across the working structures and then upward into the cloud-filled space.
