Tiled Roofs and Long Walls Along a Cobbled Street
The row of houses leads the eye down this cobbled street in Trinidad, Cuba. I photographed it with the nearest wall and roof filling the right side, while smaller façades continue toward the left. The buildings share a long, low outline, but each doorway and window changes the rhythm along it. In black and white, those differences remain clear through light, shadow and surface texture.
I like the narrow shadow beneath the tiled roof. Its repeated curved edge follows the eaves, bringing a small pattern to the much larger wall below. The windows have bars, the doorways form darker recesses, and worn areas of plaster interrupt the otherwise quieter surfaces. Beneath them, a low pavement separates the houses from the uneven stones of the street. I kept enough of the road in the view for its texture and direction to become part of the composition.
The street continues toward a more distant group of houses, with hills visible beyond them and cloud above. Those farther forms give the near wall a setting without taking attention away from its details. My interest was in the relationship between the repeated architecture and the particular marks on each surface. The tiled roof provides continuity, while the openings, plaster and patches of shadow give the individual houses their own character. The photograph preserves that long perspective, from the closest cobbles and barred window to the smaller buildings at the end of the view.
