Four Small Jets Above Red White And Blue Clouds
Four aircraft spread across the blue sky, with red, white and blue smoke gathering beneath their paths. I photographed the Red Arrows display in 2015, and watching the changing shapes was as enjoyable as following the jets themselves. The aircraft are small within the frame, but the colour gives their movement a much larger presence.
The smoke has several distinct forms. Brighter red and blue patches sit close to the aircraft, while the trails lower down have become softer and less defined. White smoke passes between the stronger colours, connecting them without creating one solid shape. I enjoy how quickly the scene shifts from precise aircraft outlines to an almost abstract arrangement.
The open sky is part of that appeal. It leaves plenty of room around the display, so the coloured clouds do not have to compete with buildings or a horizon. Each jet holds a different angle, giving the group a loose rhythm across the middle of the photograph. The small dark shapes remain easy to find within the brighter smoke.
Making this image felt like catching a brief piece of the performance before the trails changed again. That fleeting quality still matters to me when I look at it. On a wall, I would choose the photograph for someone interested in aviation, air displays or images with a lively but uncluttered use of colour. The horizontal view lets the aircraft spread outward, while the red, white and blue smoke keeps them connected within one moment.
