Pier 57 Marine and Aviation Facade Black and White Photography
A Frontal Waterfront View With Large Lettering and Windows
The words Marine and Aviation stretch across the front of Pier 57 in this New York photograph. I made the image in 2009, keeping the waterfront facade almost straight on so that its lettering, window rows and horizontal bands form a clear arrangement. The building stands above a strip of rippled water, with other city structures visible behind it.
The front has several distinct layers. Large letters sit below an upper row of windows, while the Pier 57 name appears farther down. Narrow windows divide the lower facade, and darker openings interrupt the pale surfaces near the base. I find that the signs give the view a specific identity, but the repeated lines would still hold attention without them. Along the waterline, closely spaced supports and dark recesses create another band of detail.
Black and white lets those patterns remain the focus. The building is mostly pale grey, with small differences in tone separating one section from another. The water introduces an irregular texture beneath its straight edges, and the background buildings add depth without drawing attention away from the frontage. My photograph keeps the pier’s width within the frame rather than cutting into one detail. It records the facade as I photographed it, with the lettering and waterfront structure seen together in a direct architectural view.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
