Winnipeg Pepsi Cola Painted Brick Sign Black and White Photography
A Diagonal Bottle and Vintage Lettering Fill the Wall
The large painted bottle caught my attention first, cutting diagonally across a brick wall in Winnipeg. I photographed this Pepsi Cola sign in 2021, drawn to the way an old advertisement had become part of the building’s surface. The lettering remains bold, but patches of wear and the repeated brick courses give it a character that reaches beyond the original design.
The composition has a clear rhythm. “Drink” sits above the bottle, the flowing Pepsi Cola name spreads across the lower right and another band of script runs along the top of the wall. The bottle connects these separate areas with one long sloping shape. Around the pale painted panel, darker exposed brick and the edge of the neighbouring facade keep the sign grounded in its urban setting.
I enjoy photographing these modest details of city streets. They offer a close connection between graphic design and the places where it survives. Here, the brickwork shows through the painted image, creating fine horizontal lines across the curves of the label and letters. Black and white brings those textures forward and lets the dark bottle stand out against the lighter wall.
This Winnipeg photograph has an easy nostalgic appeal for someone who likes vintage advertising, old storefront details or Canadian city imagery. The square frame gives the wall a strong presence, with plenty of small marks to explore. It is a record of a particular painted surface as I encountered it, carrying both the confidence of the original lettering and the irregular beauty of its weathering.
