Northern Ontario Abandoned Motel Graffiti Black and White Photography
Broken Windows And Open Doors Along A Low Facade
The rooms extend across this photograph in a long, low row. At the nearer end, graffiti covers the brickwork, a window has broken panes and an open doorway leads into darkness. Small trees and shrubs interrupt the facade farther along. I photographed this abandoned motel in Northern Ontario in 2021, keeping the open ground in front of the building as part of the view.
That empty foreground gives the structure room to stand apart. Its cracked surface contrasts with the plants gathered against the walls, while the flat roof makes a strong horizontal edge. My attention moves first to the nearer corner, then follows the repeated doors and windows toward the left. The building becomes less distinct as vegetation fills the gaps between those openings.
In black and white, the different surfaces carry the picture. Pale graffiti sits against darker brick, broken glass catches light, and the doorway remains a solid dark shape. The trees behind the roof soften the outline, but the building retains enough order to make its deterioration visible. I find that combination more affecting than any single damaged detail.
There is a quiet, unsettled quality to this roadside scene. The motel’s shape is familiar, yet the overgrowth and empty openings change how I read it. As wall art, I would choose it for an interest in abandoned places, Canadian roadside photography or architecture marked by time. The horizontal composition offers a broad view, with smaller textures and irregularities to discover as you spend more time with the image.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
