London Office Facade and Illuminated Staircase Black and White Photography
Vertical Glass Lines Frame a Ribbon of Stairs
Standing across the street in downtown London, I found myself studying the layers behind the glass of this office building. I photographed it in 2023, drawn to the repeated vertical lines and the pockets of light within them. The close framing gathers several floors into one composition, turning a familiar urban facade into a detailed arrangement of shapes.
A curved staircase sweeps through the lower part of the photograph. Above it, plants line a bright interior ledge beneath a row of angled lights. Farther up, reflections and glimpses of furniture overlap behind the window divisions. Each level has its own pattern, yet the upright bars across the front bind them together.
I chose black and white to bring that rhythm forward. The lit staircase forms a smooth curve against the stricter grid, while the diagonal light bars introduce another direction. Dark areas between floors give the eye pauses, and the reflected shapes make the upper section more complicated. That mixture of order and interruption is what keeps me looking.
The photograph has the presence of an architectural study, with enough interior detail to make the building feel inhabited. It offers a distinctive way to bring London into a contemporary room: through glass, light and the design of an ordinary working space. The vertical composition can sit comfortably beside furniture with clean lines, adding a rich pattern that becomes more interesting as you move closer.
