A Crossing Pedestrian Between Bright Signs and Waiting Buses
A woman crosses 42nd Street in the lower left of this photograph, while the road stretches away between tall buildings. The buses on the right and cars on the left form two edges to the view. I photographed this New York evening scene in 2019, and I am drawn to how one pedestrian changes the balance of such a large urban setting. Her figure gives the long street a clear human scale.
The centre lines lead directly toward the distance, but there is plenty to notice on either side. Illuminated signs stand out against dark facades, people gather along the pavement, and the pale sides of the buses hold a broad area of light. Reflections on the road add another layer to the composition. I like the contrast between the strong perspective and the smaller activities around it: the crossing figure, the vehicles and the people near the buildings. Black and white brings these different elements together through tone, allowing the brightest signs and reflective patches to guide the eye.
For me, the photograph carries the feeling of a city continuing through the evening. It has a busy setting, yet the open stretch of road gives the image space. On a wall, the receding street creates depth while the pedestrian offers a detail to return to. I would choose it for an interest in New York, everyday city life or urban photography where architecture and people share the frame. The scene remains specific to this moment, with its particular arrangement of traffic, light and a person crossing.
