Curved Farm Buildings Beside Distant Wind Turbines
The curve of the barn roof and the rounded side of the silo give this Ontario farm scene its shape. I photographed them in late afternoon light, with the silo close to the right edge and the barn farther into the yard. Beyond the buildings, a few wind turbines rise over the fields. Their thin forms make a useful counterpoint to the much larger structures in front of them.
I like the way light describes the barn’s metal surface. The front is bright enough to show narrow vertical ribs and the lines of its large doors, while the curved roof falls into a darker tone. The silo has a different pattern: rectangular panels and horizontal bands running around its surface. Both buildings are simple in outline, but their surfaces offer plenty to look at.
The open ground gives the photograph room to breathe. Low lines across the yard lead toward the barn, and a distant row of leafless trees marks the field boundary. Above that narrow horizon, the sky stays comparatively plain. I kept those quieter areas because they allow the buildings’ curves and textures to stand out.
In black and white, the scene becomes a study of farm architecture as much as a rural landscape. I am interested in how these practical structures occupy the space around them. The close silo, the broad barn and the small turbines establish three different scales, each held together by the same flat stretch of Ontario countryside.
