A Quiet Figure Behind Glass and Street Reflections
The window makes this photograph as much as the person behind it. Dark geometric lines cross curved panes of clear and patterned glass, dividing a London pub interior into overlapping fragments. A seated man looks down at the table while reflections of the buildings outside occupy the same surface.
I photographed this scene in London, England, in 2024. I loved the feeling of peering through an ornate old pub window: close enough to notice a small private moment, but still separated from it by glass, reflections, and the structure of the frame. The photograph keeps that sense of looking from one space into another.
His light shirt and forearms bring a human presence into the lower part of the composition. Above him, reflected brickwork and windows create another set of verticals. The glass joins those different layers without letting any one of them become completely simple or transparent.
Working in black and white draws attention to the changes between bright, cloudy panes and the dark leading around them. The window is decorative, but it also becomes a way of organizing the street and the interior into a single image.
I wanted the picture to retain the pleasure of that discovery: noticing a person through an elaborate surface, then gradually seeing the surrounding city reflected around him. The stillness inside and the visual activity on the glass are what give the scene its character.
