Bright Angled Facades Stand Beneath Towers and a Dark Sky
Crystals at CityCenter brings sharp, illuminated shapes into the Las Vegas night in this black and white photograph. The lower facades tilt and overlap beneath taller buildings, while palms line the street in front. I like how the light gives the architecture a clear presence against the dark sky, with several different patterns sharing the view.
The foreground buildings have the strongest angles. One surface rises to a narrow point, another folds toward a brightly lit entrance, and glass shows through between them. Above, the towers carry more regular rows of windows. That change in pattern gives the scene its structure. I’m drawn to the way the bright edges lead from the street into the buildings, then upward toward the darker upper floors. The palms add softer shapes along the base, and a few lights flare into small stars. At the bottom of the picture, streaks along the road suggest movement beneath architecture that feels firmly held in place.
I photographed this view in 2012. In monochrome, the city’s lighting becomes a range of pale surfaces, dark windows and fine bright lines. The photograph may suit an office, entertainment room or living space with an interest in contemporary architecture. It can also appeal to someone who remembers Las Vegas at night and enjoys seeing the Strip through its buildings. For me, the scene’s appeal is in the variety of forms: a busy street edge, sloping facades and taller grids, all brought together by the light.
