Elevated Paths Between Patterned Facades and Repeating Balcony Grids
Curved walkways and tall buildings meet in this layered view of Tokyo architecture. I photographed the scene from within the complex, looking across an elevated path toward the facades and towers beyond it. In black and white, their different patterns become especially clear: fine vertical surfaces in the middle, dense balcony grids behind, and broad curves close to the camera.
The foreground railing leads inward from the left before joining the crossing walkway. Beneath it, a narrow view of the street adds another level to the composition. Farther back, the sweeping edge of a lower building rises toward the right, contrasting with the tall, rectangular blocks above it. A pale facade near the centre has a finer, irregular pattern that gives the eye a change of pace between the larger architectural forms.
Standing among these structures, I was interested in the way one layer revealed another. The path provides a familiar scale before the view moves upward into the taller buildings and the clouds between them. I kept those relationships together in the frame so the photograph could carry both the route through the space and the surrounding height. The repeated windows give the scene order, while the curved edges prevent it from feeling rigid. That mixture of clear grids and shifting lines is what held my attention here.
