Fruit Carts and Traffic Share a Crowded Market Street
From above this market street in India, I could see several different rhythms operating in the same small space. Fruit carts stood beside moving traffic, people crossed between vehicles, and a dense row of parked motorcycles occupied the right side. I watched for a moment before making the photograph. The view was busy, but it had a structure that became clearer as I followed the carts, the gaps in the road, and the people using them.
The foreground is packed with sacks, bicycles, and scooters. Beyond them, round fruit arranged on rectangular carts creates small repeated patterns, interrupted by larger baskets and the angled canopy of an umbrella. Auto rickshaws and a car occupy the central passage, while shops line the far side beneath weathered walls and roof tiles. The elevated angle lets those layers remain visible at once. I wanted to retain the density of the scene without choosing just one person as its subject.
Black and white brings the forms together through light and shadow. Bright shirts stand out against darker vehicles, and the thin shadows of bicycle wheels describe circles across the road. The smaller details invite a closer look, but the broad arrangement still holds when seen from a distance. I made this while travelling through India in 2010, responding to the market as it unfolded. For me, the photograph is a record of a shared street, where selling, walking, and travelling all occupy the frame together.
