Red Rock Formations Beneath a Pastel Desert Sky
The tall hoodoo on the right was the first thing that held my attention. Its narrow column rises from the desert floor beneath a heavy capstone, while a cluster of broader red rock formations spreads across the opposite side of the frame.
I wanted the photograph to show both the strange geometry of these hoodoos and the softness of the evening around them. The rocks are rugged, layered and deeply textured, yet the sky moves in the opposite direction—pink, lavender and pale blue drifting gently above the desert. That contrast gives the scene much of its character.
Rather than treating the hoodoos as isolated objects, I framed the foreground rock as part of a larger landscape. Rounded forms overlap one another, pale bands cut through the red stone, and the eye eventually reaches the tall formation standing almost alone against the sky.
There is something wonderfully improbable about hoodoos. Their shapes can look deliberately designed, as though someone had balanced one piece of stone on another, yet the landscape is entirely natural.
That sense of visual surprise is what interested me here. The desert can appear severe in full daylight, but near sunset the mood changed completely. Warm rock, delicate colour and unusual forms came together for a brief period, turning an already remarkable landscape into something quieter, softer and almost surreal.
