Hiker Photographing a Canadian Mountain Glacier Colour Photography
An Orange Jacket Below Snow and Granite Peaks
The hiker’s orange jacket is a small but unmistakable point of colour below the glacier. I photographed this Canadian mountain scene with the person standing on a rocky ledge, camera raised toward the snow and granite peaks across the valley. That small figure helps me read the scale of the landscape. The ice, rock faces and forested slopes would still be substantial without it, but the person gives them a more immediate measure.
The glacier occupies much of the middle of the photograph. Its textured surface descends between dark rock walls, while brighter snow spreads across the upper slopes. A steep exposed rock face interrupts the white near the centre. I like the variety within that area: smooth looking snow, broken lines in the ice and the vertical marks of the granite.
Light reaches parts of the mountains and the nearer ridge, bringing warmer colour to the stone. Below the ice, dense trees form darker diagonal bands down the valley side. Small plants and pale rocks in the foreground connect the hiker’s position to the much more distant mountain surfaces.
I kept the full height of that relationship in a vertical composition, from the rough ground near the camera to the clouded sky above the peaks. The person remains near the lower edge, looking into the larger scene. What interests me most is this shared act of looking: a photographer within the landscape, and the mountain view extending far beyond the small place where they stand.
