A Steep Slope Leads the Herd Towards Brown Water
The first wildebeest reach the water as others follow down the steep bank behind them. I photographed this Mara River scene in the Serengeti in 2023, during the migration. What held my attention was the layered movement: animals spread across the upper slope, a tighter line descending towards the shore and splashes marking the first steps into the river.
The bank gives that movement a clear structure. Pale earth opens between patches of green vegetation, revealing the route taken by the herd. I like how the animals remain distinct at different heights, allowing the eye to follow several stages of the descent within one frame. Their darker bodies stand out against the dry ground and lighter stems.
Brown water fills the lower edge of the photograph. White splashes make bright accents beside the leading animals, while the quieter surface extends across the right. The warm earth tones and green plants keep the scene grounded in the surrounding landscape.
For me, this photograph holds the complexity of witnessing a crossing begin. The broad view gives room to the herd and terrain together, and a closer look reveals the positions of individual animals as they approach the river. As a colour wildlife print, it offers a detailed migration scene with a strong direction through the frame, suited to an interest in African landscapes and photographs of animals on the move.
