Two Hats Rest Among Letters and Worn Household Objects
Two hats rest together on a cluttered table in this black and white photograph from an abandoned home in Clarence Town, Bahamas. A pale woven hat sits above a darker one, surrounded by envelopes, papers, fabric and a worn cup. I was drawn to the contrast between their familiar shapes and the neglected setting around them.
The lighter hat catches the strongest illumination, revealing its fine texture and curved brim. The dark hat below has a broader, quieter presence, with dust visible across its surface. Paper edges cut across both rounded forms, while the gathered fabric on the right adds another kind of softness. Behind the table, the wall falls gradually into shadow.
I photographed this scene in 2010. What interests me is how ordinary belongings can suggest a life without explaining it. The objects are visible, but the circumstances that brought them here remain outside the photograph. I prefer to leave that uncertainty in place rather than turn the image into a story it cannot tell.
As a still life print, it can bring a thoughtful, nostalgic character to a study or reading room. It may appeal to someone who enjoys abandoned interiors, old objects or monochrome photography with close detail. The hats make an immediate point of focus, and the surrounding textures reward more time. For me, the photograph holds its strength in that simple contrast: recognisable personal things, set down in a room that has grown quiet.
