Blue Eyes and Golden Crowns Among Three Overlapping White Gannets
Three northern gannets fill this close colour photograph from Bonaventure Island, Quebec. Their white necks overlap against a dark background, with pale golden crowns and blue eyes giving each bird a distinct point of attention. I made the image in 2015, watching for a brief arrangement in which the different heads and bills remained clearly visible.
The birds create a lively set of curves. One lifts its bill upward on the left, another faces almost directly towards the camera from between the others, and the closest bird extends its long bill across the upper part of the group. Their bodies share the lower frame, where small areas of black feathering interrupt the broad white forms.
I found the relationship between order and movement especially absorbing. Within the colony, the birds kept changing their positions, yet for this moment their outlines fitted together with unusual clarity. The dark background helps that arrangement stand out, while the natural colour reveals the warm crown feathers and the cool rings around the eyes. Those small colour differences become more noticeable the longer I look.
Standing within the colony and observing at close range gave me the chance to recognise this alignment as it developed. The photograph keeps that immediate quality: several individual birds sharing a tight space, each with a different pose. For someone drawn to seabirds and expressive wildlife portraits, this image offers both fine plumage detail and a strong composition built from the gannets’ overlapping forms.
