Banked Aircraft Tracing Broad Red White And Blue Arcs
The aircraft are spread along a descending diagonal, while their smoke trails curve across the sky behind them. Red, white and blue lines widen and soften as they turn through the upper part of the frame. I photographed this Red Arrows display in 2015. The image holds a particular stage of the performance, when the trails had become almost as prominent as the jets.
I enjoy following the curves backward from each aircraft. Some trails remain narrow and clearly coloured; others have gathered into thicker, more diffuse bands. The broad white plume adds a different texture, with small wisps breaking away from its edge. Together, the trails make a layered pattern against the blue sky.
The jets give that pattern a sequence of sharp points. Their banked angles show the wings as small diagonal forms, and their spacing keeps the eye moving from the lower left toward the upper right. I find that arrangement especially effective because it combines a clear direction with the much softer shapes of the smoke.
Watching the display was an exciting part of making the photograph. Looking at the image now, I return to the relationship between precision and changing form: distinct aircraft outlines at one end of trails that are already spreading into the air.
For a wall, I would choose this image for someone drawn to aviation, aerobatic displays or bold colour within an open composition. It has a more flowing character than a tightly grouped formation view, with the long curved trails giving the photograph both movement and structure.
