A Skeleton Display Suspended Against Rye Castle’s Stonework

A suspended cage and skeletal figure stand out against the rough stonework of Rye Castle Museum in East Sussex. I photographed the display while exploring the castle interior, keeping the chain above and the curved wall around it within the frame. In black and white, the pale bones, dark metal bands and textured masonry create a stark arrangement of shapes and surfaces.

The museum presents this as a replica gibbet display, connected to the local story of John Breads. Knowing that it is an exhibit gives the photograph its proper context. I was interested in how the display occupied the chamber, and how the light made its construction clear against the wall.

A metal curve encloses the skull, with a chain running upward out of the frame. Riveted bands cross the torso, while longer supports continue down towards the circular fittings around the feet. The ribs repeat their own finer pattern inside that framework. At the left, a strong shadow falls over the uneven stone, echoing the suspended form without duplicating it exactly. I liked the way the wall remained visible as a surface with depth rather than becoming a plain backdrop.

This is an unusual architectural interior photograph, suited to someone interested in museum displays, Gothic imagery or the material details of historic places. The monochrome treatment gives the cage and chamber a shared range of tones while leaving their textures distinct. For me, it records a moment inside the castle when the exhibit, its shadow and the surrounding stonework formed one compelling view.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
