A Steep Tiled Roof Above an Empty Rye Street
A steep tiled roof and tall brick chimney rise over the nearest house in this black and white photograph of Rye, East Sussex. Below, an empty street curves past a row of closely joined buildings. I made the photograph during an evening walk, interested in the way their different fronts shared one continuous stretch of pavement.
The pale brickwork of the foreground house carries the strongest light. Small window panes, a dark doorway, and the uneven surface of the roof give it detail without breaking its simple shape. Bare climbing branches spread along the eaves. Farther left, shopfronts and taller windows make a narrower rhythm as the buildings recede. The roadway offers a darker strip between the two pavements, with painted edge lines following its bend and drawing the eye toward the next part of the street.
Walking through Rye, I was drawn to this manageable scale: a doorway, a short frontage, then another building a few steps away. I kept the wide area of sky above the roof so that the chimney and the roofline could remain distinct. The monochrome treatment lets the different textures sit together, from the tiled slope to brick, window frames, and paving. For me, the character of the town is held in those relationships rather than in a single landmark. This photograph records an ordinary street as I encountered it, with enough space to linger over the buildings that give it its particular shape.
