A Small Face Looking Through Upright Yellow Green Stems

Tall grass partly hides this brown bear cub, with several narrow stems passing in front of its face. The body turns across the lower part of the photograph, while the head looks toward the camera. I made the image in 2011. Its appeal begins with that glimpse of the eyes and nose through a dense field of green.

The cub has a rounded shape that contrasts with the upright grass. Small ears catch the light, and the brown fur becomes warmer beside the yellow-green stems. I enjoy how the vegetation remains part of the portrait rather than simply forming a background. It interrupts the outline and gives the animal a place within the scene.

Farther back, the grass softens into colour. The sharper stems near the cub create fine lines, while the upper part of the photograph becomes a quieter green field. That gradual change gives the face a clear point of focus without requiring the whole animal to be visible.

I find the scale especially engaging. The tall growth surrounds the cub on every side, reinforcing its small size. The expression is left to the viewer, but the visible posture and direct angle of the face give the photograph an intimate quality.

On a wall, I would choose this image for an interest in young wildlife, bear photography or natural scenes with strong green colour. The square composition balances the cub’s warm fur with the broader grassy setting. It offers a clear subject from a distance, then the smaller pleasure of finding the facial details between the stems as you look more closely.
