Three Seated Musicians Against Tall Windows on a Havana Street
Three musicians occupy a small stretch of pavement in this black and white Havana street photograph. Two guitars cross the frame at different angles, while the third musician sits beside a wooden table. Their pale clothes stand out against the darker window reflections, giving each figure a clear place within the scene I photographed in 2017.
The musician on the left has one hand along the guitar neck and the other near the strings. At the centre, a second guitar rests across crossed legs, its neck extending toward the right. Hats and sunglasses repeat across the group, but their postures differ. A hat lies on the cobblestones below the left chair; bags gather beneath the table at the other side. Those ordinary details keep the setting grounded in the street rather than separating the performers from it.
I was drawn to the way the people and the building worked together. The tall window frames form an orderly background, while reflected trees break their surfaces into darker patches. Below, the guitars introduce curves among the straight lines of chairs, table legs, and paving. I kept enough of the street in the composition to show that relationship. The photograph comes from a real encounter in Havana, and what I wanted to carry forward was the musicians’ presence within everyday surroundings. Their arrangement feels balanced, yet the small differences between them make the picture worth returning to.
