Long Shadows Over a Croatian Street Court | Limited Edition of 10
Boy Walking Toward Worn Soccer Goal Beneath Towering Shadows
From above, the scene unfolds like a quiet stage. A boy walks slowly across a worn outdoor sports court, a soccer ball rolling just ahead of his foot as he approaches a weathered goal. The surface beneath him is a patchwork of textured tiles and faded painted lines from an old basketball court, the markings still visible but softened by time. Across the entire space, long shadows stretch dramatically from an unseen structure overhead, slicing diagonally through the composition and transforming an ordinary moment into something graphic and cinematic.
What first caught my attention was the geometry. The shadows form bold, dark bands that cut across the pale ground in repeating patterns, while the court lines curve and intersect beneath them. The soccer goal sits slightly off balance, its net sagging and worn, casting its own delicate shadow across the pavement. Together they create a layered interplay of lines, shapes, and textures that give the photograph its rhythm.
Then there is the human moment. The boy and the ball provide scale and quiet movement within this structured environment. His long shadow stretches almost as tall as the goal itself, becoming a character in the frame. It’s the kind of fleeting moment I’m always drawn to when photographing cities and public spaces — ordinary life intersecting with light in just the right way.
I photographed this scene while walking through Croatia, exploring the streets and neighbourhood courts that locals use every day. It wasn’t staged or anticipated. I noticed the light and the geometry forming beneath me and waited for the moment when someone stepped into the frame. That small human presence turned a graphic pattern of shadows into a story.
Printed using archival pigment inks on museum-quality archival paper, each print is produced with exceptional detail to preserve the subtle tonal range of the monochrome image — from the deepest shadows to the delicate textures in the court surface. Every print is personally signed and includes a certificate of authenticity.
For collectors drawn to urban life, light, and everyday human moments shaped by architecture, this photograph sits naturally among my street photography wall art.
