Perforated Façade Pattern Black and White Abstract Photography
Fine Repeated Fittings Beside a Broad Band of Circular Openings
At close range, this Croatian façade becomes a dense pattern of small fittings and circular openings. I photographed it in black and white, looking along the surface so the repeating rows recede toward the left. The broad perforated band at the right gives the composition a different scale of detail beside the finer grid.
Tiny highlights pick out the raised elements across the main surface, while the gaps between them remain dark. Their rows tighten as they move farther into the frame, producing a gradual change in clarity rather than one uniform pattern. Along the right edge, larger round holes are more widely spaced and easier to follow individually. Light reaches their rims and leaves their centres in shadow, giving the strip a sense of depth within the close view.
I noticed the surface while walking in Croatia in 2020, and the angle became the key to photographing it. Looking along the wall allowed repetition and distance to work together. I kept the frame filled with the material, letting the two patterns establish the structure of the picture. Monochrome preserves the bright points without making the darker areas disappear, so there is room to move between individual details and the wider rhythm. For me, the photograph is a record of looking carefully at an ordinary part of a building. Its appeal comes from the way a practical surface can offer several different patterns within one small view.
