Tiled Roofs and Small Dormers Above Dubrovnik’s Streets
Overlapping tiled roofs fill this close view across Dubrovnik’s Old Town. I photographed them from an elevated position while exploring the city’s walls, drawn to the repetition of ridges, chimneys and small dormer windows. In black and white, the rooftops become a dense architectural pattern, with pale stone façades appearing between the darker slopes. There is no sky in the frame to interrupt that layered view.
Midday light brought out the rows of curved tiles and the marks on the chimneys. The nearest roof carries two small dormers beneath a pair of substantial chimney stacks, while another dormer sits lower at the left. Behind them, more rooflines overlap in different directions. Closed shutters, narrow windows and short sections of terrace break the pattern into smaller details. I liked how the view could feel ordered at first, then reveal a much less regular arrangement when I looked closely.
The monochrome treatment allows those surfaces to work together without the familiar roof colours becoming the main subject. Some slopes are darker, some catch a bright edge, and the stone below holds its own rough texture. I wanted the photograph to preserve that change in perspective, from walking the streets to seeing the buildings as a landscape of rooftops. For someone who enjoys Mediterranean architecture or detailed city imagery, it offers a composition with plenty to discover over time. For me, it recalls a moment above Dubrovnik when the ordinary roofs became the most compelling part of the view.
