Saskatchewan Tractor Steel Wheel Black and White Farm Photography
Rusting Wheel Lugs and a Steering Rim Above Prairie Grass
Standing beside this old tractor in southern Saskatchewan, I moved around its remains until the steel wheel and tilted steering rim separated clearly from the prairie sky. This black and white photograph keeps the machinery close, with tall grass growing through the wheel and a low horizon beyond it. The open landscape gives those worn parts room to stand out.
The large wheel fills much of the foreground. Raised metal lugs, repeating fasteners, and broad spokes make a strong circular pattern, while fine grass stems cross the darker spaces between them. Behind it, curved panels overlap beneath the steering wheel, and the edge of a perforated seat is still visible. Their uneven surfaces hold the light differently, showing the tractor's condition through texture and shape.
I was interested in the contrast between this dense arrangement of metal and the broad sky overhead. The clouds leave plenty of pale space around the upper wheel, while the grass keeps the lower half of the scene loose and tangled. Working close let me hold both scales in one frame: the small bolts and pitted surfaces near my camera, and the prairie stretching away behind them. It is that combination that gives the photograph its weight for me, with the tractor's practical forms remaining clear even as the field grows around them.
