Burlington Canal Lift Bridge Reflection Hamilton Black and White Photography
Steel Beams Mirrored in a Pavement Puddle
After a heavy rainstorm, I found a shallow puddle beside the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge in Hamilton. The soaked pavement gave me a second view of the structure, reflected below the one overhead. I worked close to the ground, adjusting the angle until the tower and the diagonal span lined up within the water. The reflection was what made this photograph come together, turning a familiar piece of industrial architecture into a layered composition.
The bridge stretches from the upper right toward its tall support tower at the left. Riveted beams, cross braces and railings create a dense framework, with the underside visible from the low position. A weathered barrier cuts across the middle distance, separating the bridge from the closer pavement. Beneath it, the puddle repeats much of the steelwork, but the reflected lines soften and bend at the water’s edges. Small ripples and the uneven surface keep it from becoming an exact duplicate.
I used black and white to connect the metal, clouds and reflections through their tones. The brighter sky opens up spaces between the beams, while the darker water gives the lower half a different weight. I remember watching the alignment carefully as I moved along the puddle. A small change in position changed how much of the tower I could hold below the bridge. The finished photograph keeps that relationship between the solid structure overhead and its less certain reflection on the ground after rain.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
