Vintage Signs and Farm Tools Across a Weathered Wooden Gable
A round Coca-Cola sign hangs among old tools on a wooden building in Yahk, British Columbia. I photographed the façade from below in black and white, including the gabled roof and clouds above it. The view brings the building’s rough boards and its varied collection of objects into one closely layered composition.
A long saw stretches across the upper planks beneath a hanging lamp. Two rectangular washboards stand beside the Coca-Cola sign, and smaller metal fittings fill spaces between them. Lower down, horseshoes, lanterns, and plates occupy the doors and surrounding wall. The roofline rises diagonally through the frame, while the vertical boards keep the frontage grounded. Bright cloud edges offer a lighter area around the darker wood and the projecting shapes along the eaves.
Standing close to the building, I was struck by how much there was to discover on a surface that could easily be passed by along the road. I kept the upward angle because it let the objects read together without losing the structure that held them. Monochrome draws attention to their outlines and wear, from the smooth circle of the sign to the teeth of the saw above it. I made this photograph in 2021, during time spent exploring and stopping to look at places along the way. What remains most appealing to me is the façade’s individuality: familiar objects brought together in an arrangement specific to this small British Columbia town.
