Buenos Aires Columns and Carved Scales Black and White Architectural Photography

Ornate Scrollwork Beneath Two Strong Upward Reaching Columns

An elaborate carved ornament fills the lower centre of this Buenos Aires facade. Scrolls curl around a pair of scales, while two columns rise above it toward the projecting stonework. I photographed the detail while exploring the city in 2011. The upward view brings decorative curves and strong structural lines into one closely framed composition.

The carving is the first place my eye settles. Its rounded edges, small leaf forms and balanced scales offer several levels of detail. Behind it, the arch and horizontal bands have simpler outlines, giving the ornament enough separation to be read clearly. I enjoy how the carving remains prominent without becoming disconnected from the surrounding facade.

Above, the columns shift the rhythm of the image. Their vertical grooves lead upward, and the low viewpoint makes them appear to lean into the space at the top. Broad darker areas between the columns add depth. The contrast with the curling stonework below keeps the photograph from relying on one repeated shape alone.

Black and white puts the emphasis on relief, light and shadow. Small shaded recesses help distinguish the carved forms, while larger planes give the upper structure a heavier presence. The stone surface shows subtle variations in tone without distracting from the main arrangement.

I would choose this photograph for an interest in Buenos Aires, architectural ornament or monochrome detail studies. On a wall, the vertical format carries the eye from the intricate carving toward the columns above. For me, that progression is the image’s lasting appeal: a close look at individual forms becoming a broader view of the facade’s design.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
