Stone Columns Frame a Lantern and Layered Facade

A hanging lantern draws the eye through an opening in this Buenos Aires architectural photograph. Broad stone supports frame it, while the building beyond recedes through a series of windows, mouldings and repeating lines. I found the combination of heavy foreground structure and finer background detail particularly compelling.

The curved band across the top gives the image a gentle sweep. Beneath it, squared edges and horizontal joints establish a more ordered rhythm. Black and white brings those relationships forward: pale stone surfaces sit beside deep recesses, and subtle marks remain visible across the masonry. The architecture feels substantial without needing the whole building in view.

I used the opening almost as a frame within the photograph. The lantern hangs near a decorative panel, providing a small point of attention against the larger columns. Behind it, the oblique facade adds depth, carrying the eye inward instead of leaving it at the front surface. Details of an ordinary occupied building remain visible alongside the formal stonework.

This close view is what interests me about photographing city architecture. A small section can reveal a different character from the familiar broad street scene. Here, curves, rectangles and changing shades of grey do most of the work. The square composition suits someone drawn to classical buildings, monochrome architectural details or Buenos Aires beyond its best-known landmarks. It offers structure and quiet complexity that become more apparent with time.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
