Bare Haliburton Forest Black and White Photography
Leafless Trunks Reveal the Depth of an Early Spring Woodland
Without leaves, the forest becomes a network of lines. I photographed this Haliburton woodland in early spring, when trunks, thin branches, and fallen wood were exposed above the leaf-covered ground. Black and white suited the view because the differences between dark bark and pale openings mattered more than any single color.
A large trunk near the right side provides a firm starting point. Around it, slimmer trees lean and bend, with many more standing in the distance. The view never settles into a simple row: some trunks overlap, others leave small gaps, and fallen limbs cut across the upright forms near the ground. Those interruptions give the photograph its depth.
I was interested in how much could be seen through the woods at this time of year. The absence of a leafy canopy reveals trees that would otherwise blend into a denser surface. Fine twigs remain everywhere, so the forest is open and intricate at once. The ground carries another layer of detail, with old leaves and broken branches providing a rough base beneath the repeated verticals.
This is a quieter part of Ontario’s seasonal change. It has none of spring’s bright foliage, but the woodland is far from empty. Looking closely brings one trunk forward and sends another back into shadow. That slow change in what becomes visible is the part I return to: an ordinary forest can hold a surprisingly complex composition when its structure is left bare.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
