Dense Pale Buildings Below a Prominent Rocky Hill
Athens spreads across the foreground in a dense arrangement of pale buildings, their rooftops and balconies catching the sunlight. Beyond them, a rocky hill rises above the city, with scattered clouds in the open sky. I photographed this Greek cityscape from an elevated position, keeping both the closely packed architecture and the hills within the same black and white view.
The nearer buildings hold the finest detail. Windows, roof terraces, and narrow gaps create a busy pattern of rectangles and shadows. Some facades are larger and more clearly defined; others disappear into the surrounding urban texture. I like how the eye can move through that variety without finding a single building that controls the entire photograph.
Farther back, the city becomes a lighter, more continuous field. The larger hill on the right gives it a clear point of contrast, with darker vegetation and exposed rock separating its shape from the buildings below. Lower hills stretch across the remaining distance, linking the city to a wider landscape.
Monochrome makes those stages of distance easy to read. Bright surfaces give the foreground energy, darker sections define the hill, and the sky offers a simpler area above both. I wanted to preserve Athens as a broad urban view, where architecture and terrain belong together. Made in 2005, the photograph records the city through its visible density and changing scale, from individual roof details near the camera to the larger forms that rise beyond them.
