Alaska Tidal Channels From Above Black and White Abstract Photography

A Pale Curving Line Crosses Textured Coastal Flats

From the airplane, the Alaskan coast became a pattern of broad surfaces and narrow dividing lines. I photographed this view in 2011, looking down at the coastal flats exposed by low tide. A pale, gently curving channel cuts across the frame, passing through a much more irregular network of dark edges and textured ground. The perspective gathers those details into an image with an almost map-like quality.

I like the contrast between that smooth central curve and the surrounding formations. Some sections have fine cracks across their surfaces; others carry small ridges along the edges where they meet deeper channels. The larger shapes fit together unevenly, creating a rhythm that feels both connected and unpredictable. Light and shadow reveal the changes in level, giving depth to what might initially appear to be a flat arrangement.

Black and white makes the different textures particularly clear. The broad pale areas invite the eye to rest, while darker channels provide routes through the photograph. The square crop keeps the composition concentrated on these relationships, with detail continuing beyond every edge. It rewards looking at both the overall pattern and the smaller marks within it.

This aerial photograph offers a quieter, more abstract way to enjoy an Alaska landscape. It can work naturally in a room with simple furnishings, where its organic lines and neutral tones have space to be appreciated. For me, the attraction is the unfamiliar view of familiar materials: earth and water becoming a detailed composition through the distance of the aircraft.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
