Round Gauges and a Steering Wheel Behind Curved Glass

Looking into the 1956 Buick Centurion, I was drawn to the arrangement behind the steering wheel. This black and white photograph takes in the dashboard from the driver’s side, with the pale bodywork across the foreground and the windshield curving around the instruments. It is an intimate view of a concept car through the shapes closest to its driver.

I kept the windshield edge in the frame because it gives the interior a clear boundary. The slender upright and the sweeping glass lead toward the wheel, then into a field of circular dials. Some gauges sit partly hidden behind the rim, while others catch enough light to stand out against the textured dashboard.

There is plenty to follow without leaving this small part of the car. The broad metal spokes stretch across the wheel, a narrow radio face sits above the instruments, and bright controls descend toward the centre. Beyond them, the passenger side falls into deeper shadow. I like that uneven distribution of light; it keeps the picture from becoming a flat catalogue of components.

Working in monochrome lets me concentrate on those relationships. Pale surfaces open up the foreground, the wheel provides a dark curve, and little reflections give the interior its depth. The result is a classic car photograph that rewards a closer look at the dashboard rather than a view of the whole vehicle.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
