1953 Buick Roadmaster Chrome Detail Black and White Photography

A Rounded Headlight Above a Row of Chrome Teeth

Chrome fills the lower half of this black and white photograph of a 1953 Buick Roadmaster. I brought the front corner close into the frame, where the rounded headlight, upright grille bars and projecting bumper form a remarkably busy arrangement. A slice of whitewall tire at the left keeps those polished shapes connected to the car.

I wanted the curves to work against one another. The headlight sits inside a tapered surround, with a smaller circular light beneath it. Below, a long bright line sweeps across the bumper before meeting the grille. Those repeated vertical bars interrupt the smooth surfaces, adding dark gaps and sharp highlights to the softer reflections.

The dark hood gives the chrome somewhere to shine. Its broad surface holds only a few thin streaks of reflected light, while the bumper picks up a much more complicated view of its surroundings. I like how the same finish can look almost liquid in one place and hard edged a few inches away.

This is the part of the Roadmaster that held my attention: a whole collection of shapes gathered into one front corner. Keeping the view tight lets the photograph move between a recognizable classic car and a study of light on metal. For me, that balance gives the detail its presence.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
