Handmade Memorial Tiles Beneath a Single Overhead Light
A single light draws the eye toward the words “Tiles for America,” assembled from separate ceramic pieces on a chain-link fence. I photographed this New York memorial in 2017, keeping the surrounding shadows in the frame. The colour image centres on a handmade tribute associated with the aftermath of September 11.
What made me stop was the scale of the individual contributions. Small painted tiles sit against a practical fence, carrying symbols, colours and messages that differ from one piece to the next. Some are immediately visible; others are partly lost in the dimmer areas. Together they form a public memorial with a very personal texture.
I framed the scene around the overhead light rather than trying to make every tile equally clear. Its warm glow gives the central lettering a place to settle, while the darker edges leave room for the eye to explore more slowly. The fence’s repeated diamond pattern connects the separate pieces without erasing their differences.
For me, the photograph holds an understated kind of remembrance. The materials are ordinary, but the care in the individual tiles gives them significance. I wanted to preserve that human scale in the image, alongside the rough wall and the shadows around it. As wall art, it may speak to someone connected to New York or interested in memorial photography and community-made public art. It offers a quiet view of how individual marks can come together to carry a shared memory.
