Flatiron Building Black and White Photography | New York City
A Dramatic Architectural View of Manhattan’s Flatiron Building
The Flatiron Building is one of those structures that changes completely depending on where I stand. From this low viewpoint, its narrow corner rises almost straight through the frame, while the two long facades fall away on either side and give the building its unmistakable wedge-like form.
What caught my attention was the architecture itself. There is so much detail packed into the surface—rows of windows, carved ornament, columns, cornices and repeating patterns—but from a distance the building still reads as one strong geometric shape. I wanted that tension between detail and form to dominate the photograph.
Black and white felt natural here. Removing colour shifts the emphasis toward stone, shadow and structure, and it lets the ornate upper levels separate cleanly from the open sky. The lack of street activity in the frame also changes the scale. There are no people or cars competing for attention; the building stands almost like a sculptural object.
I have photographed New York in many different ways, but architecture often gives me a chance to slow down and look more carefully. With the Flatiron Building, the attraction is not only its famous shape. It is the way that shape is built from hundreds of smaller architectural decisions.
For me, this photograph is about reducing a very busy city to one building, one perspective and one extraordinary piece of urban design.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
