A Radiant Art Deco Crown Against an Open Sky

The Chrysler Building’s crown needs very little around it. In this black and white photograph, its bright tiers rise against a mostly clear sky, tapering to a fine spire. I concentrated on the upper part of the New York landmark, leaving the surrounding city outside the frame so its Art Deco design could hold the view.

Each curved tier repeats the triangular window pattern below it, becoming smaller as the building narrows. Light catches the metal surfaces, separating the crown from the darker sky. The pattern is intricate, but the overall shape remains simple and immediately recognizable.

Lower down, rows of rectangular windows provide a quieter rhythm. They establish a solid base for the more elaborate forms above, while projecting ornaments break the outline near the shoulders of the building. I like that gradual change from an orderly facade to the crown’s radiating geometry.

The open sky gives the spire plenty of room. A little cloud appears near the lower right, but most of the background stays open. That restraint makes the building feel distinct rather than crowded by the skyline.

My interest here was in the relationship between detail and silhouette. From a distance, the photograph reads as one tall, luminous shape; closer inspection reveals the windows, curved bands and changing surfaces that give it character. It is a direct architectural portrait of one of New York’s most recognizable buildings.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
